About Regensburg

Regensburg has been an important trading centre on the Danube for millennia, and its architecture is a testament to the town's wealth and importance. Known as both "Italy's northernmost city" and "Germany's medieval miracle", most of the truly exceptional buildings went up between the 11th and 13th centuries and it's in some of these historic buildings that you will find some of the best places to stay in Regensburg. The city is home to around 150,000 inhabitants, so it's far from huge - but what it lacks in size it more than makes up for in character.

Regensburg has an important footnote in German history, due to the Old Town Hall being the site of The Permanent Imperial Diet from 1663 to 1806. Acting as the base of representation for the Holy Roman Empire's Imperial Estates, this is largely seen as being the precursor to the country's Federal Council.

The best way to get to know Regensburg is by strolling through the narrow streets of its historic centre taking in your beautiful surroundings. Alternatively, you could hop on a boat trip down the Danube and look out at the numerous coloured houses dotted along the river, whilst if you visit in winter then be sure to visit the Christmas market for a truly magical experience.

What not to miss

  • St Peter's Cathedral is a stunning example of Gothic architecture, with equally as impressive stained-glass windows to boot.
  • Haidplatz, the triangular square in the centre of town, is full of resplendent buildings dating back to the 13th century.
  • The 11th century Romanesque St Emmeram's Basilica boasts stunningly decorated interiors that are absolutely breathtaking.
  • If you want to find out more about the town's history then spend a few hours in the Regensburg Museum of History.

Due to it's many appealing attractions the best places to stay in Regensburg often get booked up well in advance so we recommend you get planning!

Travel Information

  • Unfortunately, Regensburg doesn't have its own airport - if you're flying in from abroad then your best bet is to head to Munich Airport before taking the train on to your final destination. The train journey should take around an hour and a half.
  • There's never really a bad time to come to Regensburg! Weather-wise, the best time to visit is during the summer months when the average temperature climbs to 23°C in the peak months of July and August.
  • However, this is peak tourist season and so it's likely to be pretty busy. If you're looking for a quieter and cheaper time to visit then consider coming in spring or autumn.
  • The snowy winters are also beautiful, so if you're looking for a festive trip abroad then Regensburg is a wonderful option.
  • If you'd like the freedom of having a car with you then browse through the wide variety available online with our partner, Rentalcars.
