About Elba

Elba, the largest island in the Tuscan Archipelago, offers sea views, charming hilltop towns, and a surprisingly diverse hotel scene. Whether you’re after a splash of luxury, a beachfront family escape, or a cosy budget stay, Elba delivers. Most hotels cluster along the northern coast—think Portoferraio for variety, Marciana Marina for upscale charm—but don’t overlook the quieter southern bays or the green, peaceful interior if you're craving tranquillity. Wherever you land, Elba’s got your stay covered.

Elba might be best known as a sunny beach getaway, but there’s so much more to discover beyond the shoreline. If you're up for a bit of adventure, the island’s interior offers a fascinating mix of history and nature, from ancient forts and castles to charming churches and peaceful woodlands—perfect for those who want a holiday with a bit more character.

Travel information

  • Elba has its own airport: Elba Airport (though it only operates during the busiest season) and has connections to Florence, Lugano, Pisa, Milan and Zurich among other destinations. Otherwise the nearest airport is Pisa Airport, from which it’s a train to Piombino, followed by a ferry trip across the water. Allow about four and a half hours to make this leg of your journey in that way, or you can drive it in about two and a half — including the car ferry.
  • For car hire prices, we recommend you visit our online partner Rentalcars.
  • Weather-wise, Elba's obviously nicest in the summer months — in July the average daily temperature rises to 25°C. This however is peak tourist season, so if you fancy a quieter and cheaper time to visit then consider May or September.
