Built by the Portuguese, Paraty grew wealthy as a result of the 18th-century gold rush. Named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019, the town has been beautifully preserved. • Pousada do Ouro oozes historic charm. Housed in an 18th-century buildings in the heart of the old town, the hotel features painted wooden shutters, tiled floors and antique furnishings. There's a refreshing swimming pool and big breakfasts are served in a traditional dining room with chequered flooring.  
• Casa Turquesa, also in the historic centre, is a boutique bolthole with just nine rooms. Individually decorated spaces are clad in bold primary colours, with patterned textiles, draped four-poster beds and views of the rooftops. The courtyard and pool are ideal for unwinding after days of exploring. 
• Pousada Literaria takes things up a notch with swish, design-led interiors in a restored heritage residence. A romantic boutique choice with clean lines, polished wood, earthy tones and a luxury feel. There's an excellent restaurant, too.

Travel Information

• Fly to Rio de Janeiro International Airport, 4.5 hours' drive from Paraty, or to São Paulo/Guarulhos International Airport, 6 hours away. Regular long-distance buses are available, and most hotels will be happy to arrange an airport pickup in advance.

• Travel between June and September for cooler temperatures (averaging around 18-20°C) and relatively dry weather. The rest of the year is warmer, but you can expect fare more rain!
