About Sartène

A characterful hill village tucked halfway between Bonifacio and Ajaccio, Sartène has long intrigued visitors. Dubbed the 'most Corsican of Corsican towns’ by French novelist Prosper Mérimée, it remains a fantastic destination for travellers eager to immerse themselves in the timeless magic of rural Corsica. Whilst some of the best places to stay in Sartène are simple and historic, our top spot is a modern boutique hotel on the outskirts of town, perfect for couples, friends or families eager to explore the region.

Built around the Place Porta, dominated by the Eglise Saint-Marie and the former palace of the Genoese Lieutenant, Sartène is ideal for relaxed rambles. Narrow streets are lined with tall 16th-century granite building, pretty churches and laid-back cafés, inviting guests to people-watch over long lunches. Delve into the area’s past at the Musée de la Préhistoire — set in the old prison — before marvelling at the neolithic megaliths of Cauria, the Pont de Spina Cavaddu and the ruined Torra di Roccapina.

Coastal Propriano is just 20 minutes' drive away. Afternoons on the beaches of Tizzano, Roccapina or Campomoro are superb, as are rural hikes and tours and tastings at local wineries. The area’s wine-making past reputedly dates back to the visit of Napoléon III. Speak to your hosts at the best places to stay in Sartène for their top vineyard recommendations.
