Just inland from the beautiful seaside town of Carmel-by-the-Sea, the lush Carmel Valley is known for its idyllic landscapes, abundance of wildlife and superb array of vineyards, ranches, spas and retreats. Accommodation options in this corner of California are fantastic, with everything from simple B&Bs to 500-acre resorts ideal for active families, friends or couples. Many of the best places to stay in Carmel Valley boast expansive views and large grounds — perfect for outdoorsy explorations or relaxing in absolute bliss.

Much of the Carmel Valley’s appeal lies in its striking landscapes, which can be appreciated by following a network of trails on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. The Garland Ranch Regional Park is particularly lovely. You’ll find world-class vineyards offering tours and tastings in the area, too.

For pretty streets lined with heritage homes, shops and eateries, head to Carmel-by-the-Sea. Founded in 1771, the Carmel Mission is the area’s most intriguing historic site. The nearby beaches are wonderful for days out as a family, whilst golfing enthusiasts will be spoilt for choice on the Monterey Peninsula’s 19 championship courses. Fans of motorsport can catch a race at Weathertech Raceway Laguna Seca, hone their skills at the Skip Barber Racing School, or go off-road with a Land Rover driving lesson.
