Cool iced tea and water await in Hotel Balmes' lobby, where glass cases display sub-Saharan African masks and sculptures, creating an unexpectedly cultured, calming welcome.

Beyond a long corridor lies the hotel's secret weapon: a leafy garden with a pool, bar, small gym and showers that feels wonderfully removed from the bustle of the Eixample. It's the sort of place you'll happily while away an afternoon with a book and a cold drink - or linger after check-out before an evening flight.

Rooms err on the darker side, but that adds to the sense of serenity, making them wonderfully restful after a day exploring the city. Friendly staff couldn't have been more helpful, and breakfast is a particular highlight, with fresh fruit, local cheeses and charcuterie, plus omelettes cooked to order. Passeig de Gràcia is a short stroll away. An understated retreat.
