“A wonderful lakeside property with exceptionally attentive staff. Large rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows and secluded terraces, set amongst tropical vegetation. A truly tranquil spot not far from many of the area’s Mayan ruins.”

Hotel review

Bolontiku Hotel is a peaceful, lakeside base from which to explore this fascinating part of Guatemala with its dense jungle, vast lake and ancient archeological sites. From the outset, there’s a high level of service and the refreshing hibiscus tea and cooling flannel are well received as guests arrive, stepping off their private boat. Staff remain attentive throughout, organising well-coordinated transfers, setting up tours of Tikal and arranging workshops within the hotel, from rum tasting and cooking to bracelet making.

A romantic destination, yet equally well set up for families, Bolontiku Hotel is home to 15 individual villas surrounded by leafy tropical gardens. Carefully placed to ensure privacy and lakeside views, the rooms are spacious and air conditioned with generous bathrooms and walk-in showers. Each villa has a terrace with comfortable seating and there are suites for families. A large swimming pool is situated next to an open-sided restaurant and bar area. The à la carte breakfast menu is particularly good, with a mix of traditional Guatemalan, and more familiar, dishes.

After a day exploring the impressive temples and pyramids of Tikal, enjoy the serenity of Bolontiku Hotel. Take a kayak or pedalo boat and explore the lake, swim in the warm waters and dive from the hotel’s swimming platform or admire birds and butterflies on a hiking trail in the jungle. There’s a spa, complete with a Temazcal (Mayan sweat lodge). Tours extend beyond Tikal, too. Cross the lake and visit the tiny and colourful island of Flores or visit another of the Mayan sites in the area. The hotel can arrange helicopter flights to hard-to-reach El Mirador or stick to the lake and get a boat to Tayasa, a Mayan site currently being excavated. Here, wooden walkways lead past ruins to a local archaeological museum which Bolontiku Hotel proudly supports as part of a local initiative. The hotel has recently joined The Cayuga Collection, a small collection of luxury and sustainable hotels in Central America.

Why do people love staying in your hotel? Guests love the feeling of arriving at a private island since the only way to get here is by water. The hotel's proximity to Flores and the Mayan ruins is definitely a plus, but what people enjoy most is being able to relax by the lake after a day of exploring. More active travelers also tell us they love the hiking trails and the stunning views of the lake from the top of the property.

What is there to do in the area? Visiting Petén is all about exploring the Mayan ruins, which can take up one or two days depending on your interests. There's also the charming island town of Flores, which is in the process of becoming a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Strolling through its streets is a great half-day activity—you can stay for drinks or a light meal. Other local excursions include a trip to Crater Azul or horseback riding at a local farm. We recommend a minimum stay of three nights so you have time to relax by the lake at Bolontiku.

What kind of breakfast do you offer? We offer a full breakfast that includes plenty of local tropical fruit, juices, and great coffee. You can choose from typical Guatemalan dishes or classic breakfast options like eggs, avocado toast, and pancakes. Breakfast is included in the room rate.

Do you offer other meals? And can you recommend good places to eat out locally?Yes, our lakeside restaurant serves lunch and dinner with a focus on fresh, local ingredients. We have plenty of seafood on the menu, including a white fish caught by local fishermen right in the lake.

Which are your most popular room types, and why? At Bolontiku, we understand that every guest is unique, which is why we offer a range of accommodations to suit the kind of stay you're looking for.

Our most popular rooms are the Lake Breeze Suites, which are perfect for travelers who want space and indulgence. At 31.4 m², they feature a private balcony overlooking Lake Petén Itzá and a private in-room jacuzzi, making them ideal for couples.

For guests who plan to spend their days exploring but still want a peaceful place to return to, our Lake View Suites are the perfect match. These suites offer everything you need for a comfortable stay, including a balcony with beautiful lake views.

If your trip is all about connecting with nature, our Garden Rooms are a great choice. They are nestled within lush gardens, so you might spot tropical birds right outside your window. These rooms offer all of our signature amenities and are a great option if you'll be spending more time out exploring but still want a serene place to return to.

What facilities do you have for children, and can you fit extra beds in your rooms? We have a pool and a swimmable lake that are great entertainment for kids. For older children, we also offer kayaks and boat trips. We can easily fit extra beds in our rooms.

What message would you like to give The Hotel Guru readers? If you have not visited Petén, you have not truly seen Guatemala. A day trip to Tikal with one of our local guides is a must. After a day of adventure, you can relax at Bolontiku, enjoy the lake, and experience the authentic service provided by our local staff.
