Just a 10-minute walk along the coast from Trogir's medieval centre, with its quaint cobbled alleys and Unesco-listed cathedral, Brown Beach House occupies an early-20th-century tobacco warehouse. Reception is in an elegant cocktail bar, so you'll be greeted with a drink, which you might enjoy in the adjoining lounge, graced by a piano, potted palms, ceiling fans and a collection of art books. In my opinion, the nicest rooms are in the main building, combining the original curved beams and deep-set windows with contemporary furnishing, while the additional rooms in the new purpose-built annex are more modern. The annex also houses the small spa, offering massage, hot tub, hamam and a plunge pool.
The hotel stands in a walled garden, where the Cartina restaurant serves Mediterranean dishes with a modern twist on a terrace through summer. There's also a 20-metre outdoor pool rimmed by a wooden deck and white parasols, and out front you have a small beach with an inflatable waterpark, ideal for kids. It's conveniently close to Split airport (5km/3mi) and Split itself (27km/17mi), and makes a lovely venue for weddings.
Jane's Hot Tip: Catch the little passenger boat to Split, or take the local bus, to see Diocletian's Palace
