Approached through the wide-plained Alentejan countryside, past white-washed farmhouses complete with the painted blue trim that wards off the devil and the large, squat chimneys in which the local black pigs are smoked, Casa Azimute brings all that is best in the region under one roof. Owners Danny and Andy have lovingly restored the original farmhouse, contrasting it with a strikingly contemporary structure next door where varnished cement floors are topped by huge floor to ceiling glass windows letting the countryside in. Overlaid against this are colourful, artisanal hand-painted tiles and locally woven rugs bringing a sense of place. Four rooms, complete with vivid tiled showers, lie downstairs, with doors opening out onto the swimming pool. Two suites are reached by an outside staircase. One in hues of deep blue has a window onto the 13thcentury castle of Estremoz which tops the hill in the distance. The other in pop yellow comes with a day bed and an outside shower allowing you to wash to the sounds of goats bleating. Both suites have free standing bath tubs inset in the rooms as well as showers and all rooms have Nespresso machines.
