Hotel review

Located just outside the fortified village of Monsaraz, Horta da Moura presents a classic interpretation of Alentejan rural tourism, presenting itself more like a small village rather than a single hotel structure. The property is composed of three low-rise, whitewashed buildings with blue trim, arranged along cobbled pathways interspersed with gardens and shaded terraces: rooms in one, the restaurant in another, and the bar in a third.

The generously sized rooms exude rustic simplicity—tiled floors, wooden shutters and traditional (somewhat stiff) furnishings. Many units include fireplaces or private outdoor areas that enhance the sense of seclusion. Bathrooms have been refitted and are modern and comfortable. The hotel’s principal appeal lies in its setting: overlooking the Alqueva landscape, with a large pool and extensive grounds, an orange grove and thousand-year-old olive trees.

The hotel goes heavy on experiences, with cycling, gin tastings, hot-air balloon rides, horseback riding, lake excursions, and Yoga sessions at a nearby observatory on offer. Facilities are relatively understated, and the restaurant provides standard but generously portioned Alentejan fare. Befitting of those prioritising location, calm and regional atmosphere over luxury polish.
