Once the red-brick headquarters of the Tyne Tees Steam Shipping Company, now a classily-converted urban retreat. A ten-minute waterfront walk from Newcastle’s nightlife epicentre, The Quayside, and therefore a quieter alternative, it features a candlelit bistro, glass-panelled wine-tasting room and outdoor (heated) cigar shack, plus spectacular wine-glass chandeliers. Of the 42 bedrooms, the superior suites are like large warehouse loft apartments, with standalone bathtubs.

Hotel du Vin & Bistro Newcastle

A handsome building of glowing-red bricks and multi-paned windows, it’s been extended with another wing, across a wedge-shaped courtyard, that mirrors the original. Inside, it feels like a chilled-out gentleman’s club with well-worn Chesterfields, slate floors, exposed brickwork and bold modern lighting.
