“Quaint owner-run inn built in the style of an Alpine chalet. Genuine European touches include wooden balconies, Austrian antique furnishings, traditional German breakfasts & even imported carpets. Book historic suites for romantic stays. An authentic mountain experience in the heart of town.”

Hotel review

Off tourist-packed Main Street, Pension Anna delivers exactly what you come for (assuming you fancy delighting in the bizarre quirkiness of a faux-Bavarian town, plonked near Washington’s Cascade Mountains). Leavenworth got this makeover in the 1960s - even the McDonald's sports 'rustic' cladding.

Step back in time with elaborate wooden walls, chintzy chandeliers, and comfy sleigh beds topped with ornate canopies. Some rooms boast jet baths, while all embrace the theme with objectively hideous  (sorry - authentic) green carpets.

Come morning, Pension Anna proudly offers 'the only true German breakfast in the village' - that means meats, cheeses, German breads, homemade streusel coffee cake, more meat, more cheese - and even boiled eggs served with hand-knitted chicken covers. Unapologetically, gleefully over the top.

Beyond the kitsch, Leavenworth offers reasonable value as your base for stunning outdoor adventures - it's flanked by first-class ski areas Mission Ridge and Stevens Pass, though day passes are typically expensive. It's also a great choice for hiking or mountain biking, with a side of Bavarian theatrics come evening. Go the whole schwein and time your visit for Oktoberfest, or December's Christmas tree lighting - and don’t skip the Nutcracker Museum.
