Jesmond Dene House, a historic 19th-century mansion surrounded by the woodland of Jesmond Dene, is a charming hotel just a short drive from Newcastle’s city centre. Once a grand private residence built in the 1800s for entertaining, this Arts and Crafts house has been carefully restored whilst retaining its original wood panelling, fireplaces, wooden doors, and polished floorboards, offering guests a blend of heritage, history, and luxury by the river. We stayed in Room 2, which had been recently refurbished. Once the library it has high ceilings with the original wooden panelled ceiling still in place. Think thick black-out curtains, a superking-size bed, with a beautifully designed headboard and a mini bar complete with popcorn, hot chocolate and Maltesers. The large en-suite bathroom features both a tub big enough for two and a spacious walk-in shower. At the time of writing (February 2026), they are just finishing off the hot tub garden suites. There are two rooms (room 1 and 2) which are on the ground floor, ideal for those in a wheelchair or lacking mobility.
The hotel’s restaurant, Fern, offers a well-balanced menu (including fish, steak and vegetarian options) led by Executive Chef Gareth Rayner, whose focus is on the simplicity of good food done well. The special house burger was perfectly cooked with a delicious homemade relish, and the cheese plate made for a good sharing course. If you have a sweet tooth, you'll love the warm apple and almond cake with crème anglaise and apple sorbet - the standout dish of the evening. The restaurant atmosphere is relaxed but lively.
Jesmond Dene House is ideal for a weekend away, especially for couples and food lovers. Its proximity to the city, combined with the peace of its woodland setting, makes it one of the best boutique hotel options in the North East.

Why do people love staying in your hotel? We are in an enviable location; almost in the country yet still in the city. We have space, peace and room to breathe. We don’t take our good fortune for granted. All this makes us even more passionate that our guests are well looked after; above all, feel at home. Because it is a home, albeit quite a grand one. As an independent hotel, we can make our own rules. We can be flexible to meet our guests’ wishes. We listen to what you say and do our best to accommodate. We’re passionate about detail, too. Often it’s the little things that make the difference. Whether you come to Jesmond Dene House to meet a friend for coffee or for an indulgent weekend away, we look after you in exactly the same way. You are our guests and we want you to feel comfortable.
What is there to do in the area? Eldon Square Shopping Centre, Sage Quayside, Pets Corner, St James’ Park
What kind of breakfast do you offer? Continental breakfast. Full Cooked Breakfast Menu.
Do you offer other meals? And can you recommend good places to eat out locally?

Which are your most popular room types, and why? All of our rooms are uniquely designed and vary in size and amenities. Deluxe rooms are quite popular as they are spacious and most with beautiful views of the gardens, located in the original building. Our junior suites are also very popular as they are in the New House and very spacious.
What facilities do you have for children and can you fit extra beds in your rooms? Yes, some of our rooms can hold cots and extra beds for 12 and under. We have two junior suites with sofa beds, for adults. We are located in the Dene – which has multiple walking paths to explore as well as Pet’s Corner.
"A grand city mansion that persuades you it’s a rather lovely country house."
