Hotel review

The Muh Shoou Xixi Hotel sits within 2,800-acres of protected wetland, whose wild and watery expanse highlights the sleek and minimalism of the property. The rooms, in four petite towers, have fully glass walls, allowing for excellent views out into the surrounding nature (they are also equipped with blackout shades). Among tones of slate and dark wood, the furniture is slight, including a low, Chinese-style table. The bed, wide and comfortable, and bathroom, with both a tub and shower, and the complimentary minibar are the in-room highlights. All rooms have a balcony, and for those on the ground floor, in-room, “cookout” style meals are offered.

For everyone else, the Xi Yin restaurant provides a collection of international wines to pair with incredible local dishes, with seasonal ingredients sourced from the local area. Ye Qiu, the hotel bar, serves an afternoon tea with fiddly finger sweets, local Longjing tea, and a variety of sionized cocktails (“Macha rum,” “Says Mr. Shi,” and “Forest Sunset”) over a large pond where wading birds fish. In the summer months, a swimming pool is the best option to beat the heat.

The hotel will also arrange local activities, including guided tours of the Xixi Wetland, rides on a traditional hand-paddled boat, and tickets to the fabulous “One Night at Xixi” opera, an experience that is one of Hangzhou’s premier attractions.

The best thing about Muh Shoou is the sense of quiet and seclusion. Hangzhou’s city centre is not far away, but there is no sense of the wider urbanism that surrounds the wetland. The nights are filled with stars and the sounds of frogs croaking in the darkness.
