Hotel review

Hot tip: Wild beaches. Monte Clérigo was just voted Europe's Best Beach for 2026, and the surrounding coastline offers secluded spots where you can walk for hours without meeting another soul

What makes Praia do Canal special is how deeply it connects you to this extraordinary corner of Portugal, one of the last truly wild coastlines in Europe. Phone signal drops a few minutes before arrival on a wildflower-lined path.

Moorish-inspired sandstone buildings and red sun loungers surround the infinity pool. Bright rooms are modern and considered, with clashing print headboards, generous showers and deep baths. There are free yoga classes, the gym is well-sized and better-equipped than most; the compact spa offers a Finnish sauna, hammam, bio sauna, cold plunge and a little outdoor infinity pool, where swallows circle as the sun goes down.

The nearby Rota Vicentina trails wind through protected valleys and along clifftops where hiking and jeep tours add two thousand years of history, from the Arabic roots of the word Algarve to the Moorish castle at Aljezur. At the Golden Market, pick up fish and hand it to the chef for dinner (try sourdough finished in the hotel kitchen, velvet goat's cheese, local presunto, and Atlantic prawns with Alentejo garlic). Stop by Vincentino Winery and take a bottle back for the balcony. The hotel sits in one of Portugal's darkest sky zones - astrotourists will discover it soon enough. Come before they do!

Map & Location

See what they say

Why do people love staying in your hotel? Guests tell us it is the feeling of truly disconnecting. The phone signal drops before you arrive, the horizon is endless, and the only sound is the Atlantic. They find comfort in the minimalist architecture, the spa, and the quality of local ingredients on their plate. It is a place that slows you down, on one of the last wild coastlines in Europe.

What is there to do in the area? The hotel sits inside the Costa Vicentina Natural Park, one of Europe's largest protected coastal areas. Guests can hike the Rota Vicentina, surf uncrowded Atlantic waves, or go birdwatching. The region is also a certified Dark Sky destination, perfect for stargazing. Nearby, explore the Moorish castle in Aljezur, visit the Vincentino Winery, or browse the Golden Market.

Within walking distance, you will find wild beaches. Monte Clérigo was just voted Europe's Best Beach for 2026, and the surrounding coastline offers secluded spots where you can walk for hours without meeting another soul. Arrifana and Amoreira are equally stunning. This is one of the last unspoiled corners of the Algarve.

What kind of breakfast do you offer? We serve a buffet breakfast built around local and seasonal produce, complemented by an à la carte selection of hot dishes such as eggs Benedict, Royale, omelettes and the chef's signature toasts. The buffet features sourdough baked in our kitchen, regional cheeses and presunto, seasonal fruits, homemade jams, granola, and artisanal pastries. Served at Azeitona Restaurant with views over the nature reserve, breakfast here is the first experience of the day.

Do you offer other meals? And can you recommend good places to eat out locally? We offer a variety of dining experiences throughout the day, each inspired by the surrounding landscape and the rich culinary heritage of the Algarve. At Azeitona, our signature restaurant, guests can enjoy contemporary Portuguese cuisine crafted from seasonal and locally sourced ingredients. Zimbro, located by the pool, offers a relaxed atmosphere with lighter dishes, fresh salads, grilled specialities and refreshing beverages. For cocktails, premium spirits and light bites, Medronho Bar provides the perfect setting to unwind before or after dinner. Room service is also available.

For local recommendations outside the hotel:
O Sargo: perched above Monte Clérigo beach, fresh seafood with a modern twist.
O Paulo in Arrifana: a local institution for simply grilled fish by the sea.
Pont'a Pé in Aljezur: quality local cuisine, fresh fish and grilled meats in a welcoming setting.
Sítio do Forno: a favourite for shellfish and mariscos.
Várzea: organic farm-to-table bistrot where the produce comes straight from the garden.

Which are your most popular room types, and why? The most requested are our top-tier suites. The Signature Suite is an open-plan space with a private rooftop, plunge pool, and panoramic ocean views, plus a separate living room with fireplace. It is typically chosen for anniversaries and honeymoons.
The Premium Suite is a ground-floor suite with a private sky terrace, soaking tub, and sun loungers. Guests often mention how quiet and private it feels, ideal for returning guests who want something special.
The Garden Suite with Plunge Pool is our two-bedroom option with two marble bathrooms, a private garden, and its own plunge pool. Works particularly well for families or two couples travelling together. Beyond the categories, what guests consistently mention is the sense of space. Every room uses natural materials and earthy tones, with private outdoor areas, so even our entry-level rooms feel like a proper retreat.

What facilities do you have for children? We welcome families and offer Family Suites, babysitting upon request, and outdoor activities suitable for children within the estate. All rooms feature sofa beds, so no extra beds are needed. We also provide cots for babies.

*Our spa is open to families in the morning (10:00–12:00). From 12:00 onwards, it is reserved for adults.

What message would you like to give The Hotel Guru readers? Come before the world discovers it. Praia do Canal Nature Retreat sits on one of Europe's last wild coastlines, where quiet luxury meets raw nature. Whether you come for the dramatic cliffs, the gastronomy, or simply the silence, this is a place that stays with you.
