Washington Heights pulses with Dominican culture - music spills from shops, the neighbourhood humming with energy that inspired Lin-Manuel Miranda's In the Heights. The hotel's lobby draws directly from that vibrancy, celebrating New York's melting pot spirit. Staff are kind and down-to-earth, eager to share local recommendations. Manhattan is easily accessible (thirty minutes), and being this far uptown means significantly better prices. Rooms are basic and utilitarian - recessed lighting, concrete floors, frosted glass separating shower from bedroom. No proper wardrobe, not much warmth, but functional for short, affordable stays. Grab pastries and coffee 24/7 from the front desk, or hit the Instagram-friendly gym, fine for quick holiday workouts.

JALAO serves Dominican-inspired food with a rooftop event space. The neighbourhood is lively, grittier than tourist Manhattan in places - don't be put off, but stay alert after dark. Street noise (horns, sirens) is typical but manageable. Not luxury, but excellent value for culture-seekers wanting genuine New York beyond polished midtown hotels.
