A 200-year-old Porto soap factory turned, with Portuguese flair into one of the city's most charming boutique hotels. A cosy garden spa, pool, restaurant, and staff that make you feel like the only guest. Porto has no shortage of heritage hotels, but Torel Saboaria makes the unique history of the building the whole point. Home to a soap factory for over two centuries, Torel preserved the Baroque façade, original black and white hydraulic tiles and distinctive brownish-green woodwork, all immediately soothing.

Art installations stack soap bars line by line, washing hangs playfully in the breakfast area, and the 28 rooms are named after soap ingredients (Coconut, Lavender, Rosehip, Vanilla). Terracotta and wicker bring warmth and texture, and natural light floods in through generous windows overlooking the garden. Deep bathtubs in some rooms (even a jacuzzi in the Royal Suite) are heavenly, and in this context, it seems only right to lather up.

Even a classic Porto rainstorm couldn't dent the experience; staff cheerfully offer umbrellas and make you feel completely pampered. Luffa delivers bold, creative Portuguese cooking, but when you venture out, Ribeira, the Clérigos Tower and the legendary Livraria Lello bookstore are all a short stroll away.

The staff, though, are the real story. Some of the most genuinely warm and personable we've encountered anywhere.
