About Kalimpong

Sitting on a mountain ridge overlooking the River Tista, even by Indian standards Kalimpong is a truly beautiful hill station. A former trade route for tea and spices between Tibet, Nepal and Bhutan, and belonging to the then kingdom of Sikkim it now lies between the states of West Bengal and Sikkim. Covered in forests of mountain oak and carpets of flowers, in the spring it is famed for its cultivation of roses, dahlias and orchids in particular. Our pick of the best places to stay in Kalimpong are perfect for exploring the picturesque hills and countryside.

Influenced by its former trade link routes, Kalimpong is home to plenty Buddhist monasteries housing ancient Tibetan manuscripts and ornate wall paintings. Durpin Gompa in particular is an impressive visit.

Like most hill stations Kalimpong enjoys pleasant weather and can be visited almost all year, however it is a pastoral paradise in spring when the hillside is in full bloom with its famed floral crop. Avoid monsoon between June – October when the roads turn into rivers and many are closed.

Our pick of the best places to stay in Kalimpong are perfect for a relaxing getaway amidst West Bengal’s verdant landscapes.
