About Lisbon

Lisbon is a vibrant city packed with history, charm and plenty of colour. A capital since its conquest from the Moors in 1147, Lisbon is an essential stop when visiting Portugal to get a real feel for the country’s history and culture. When searching for the best places to stay in Lisbon you will find a broad selection as each neighbourhood has its own unique feel and architecture. From charming B&Bs hidden away in the colourful alleyways of Alfama, Lisbon’s oldest district, to regal converted mansions in glitzy Lapa and Madragoa.

Built across seven hills, Lisbon is an easy city to explore, with plenty of treasures to discover. Take a stroll uphill from the river and you'll come upon grand Gothic cathedrals, nice little museums, pretty palaces and the odd monastery, just as readily as you'll find charming cafes and restaurants.

This is a friendly city, with plenty of well-used public baths and a whole district full of music venues where you can hear everything from fado to reggae to electronica.

It is also a city on the ocean, which keeps things balmy, and Lisbon is probably one of Europe's warmest winter city break destinations. Summer is obviously very hot and busy so if you want to ensure a bed in one of the best places to stay in Lisbon, you'll need to plan well ahead.

Some of our Lisbon Collections:

Where to stay - which neighbourhood?

  • If you’re travelling to Lisbon for the food and the culture, graceful Baixa is probably one of the best places to stay. This district was completely rebuilt after the earthquake in the 18th century, in a rather grand, neo-classical style.
  • If you’re here for the city’s history, the oldest part of Lisbon is the Alfama district, a Moorish maze of cobbled alleyways opening onto tiny squares with fountains and flowers. This area surrounds the cathedral and the castle of St. George, but it’s far from touristy.
  • Chiado is the artist’s quarter, with elegant Art Nouveau era cafes, beautiful Belle-Époque buildings and some of the best restaurants in Lisbon.
  • While adjacent Bairro Alto is lively come the evenings.
  • If you’re looking for a peaceful district, consider Belém, which is at the river mouth, just outside of the centre of town.
  • Or choose Lapa and Madragoa, some of Lisbon's smartest neighbourhoods, filled with large colourful mansions on steep narrow streets.
  • Avenue da Liberdade runs through the heart of the city and offers easy access to restaurants, shops and sights as well as some of the best luxury hotels in Lisbon.
  • For food enthusiasts Cais do Sodre is a great choice. Here you'll find the city's trendiest restaurants as well as Mercardo da Ribeira, Lisbon's largest food market.

The Hotel Guru's pick of the best places to stay in Lisbon vary from excellent value B&Bs to top end luxury for those with deep pockets. Use our guide and start to plan your city break.

Travel Information

  • Part of the appeal of Lisbon is that it’s easy to get to. You can fly into Lisbon Portela (LS), which is 6.5kms from the city, close to Loures. The centre of town is about 25 minutes from the airport and there are easy public transport options: there is a metro line which will take you straight to the centre and all around Lisbon, whilst taxis are amazingly good value and there is a good bus service too. Lisbon is also connected to the European rail network, and you can get there in just shy of 24 hours via Paris. Slightly more surprising, is that Lisbon is a busy port and there are three cruise ship terminals: Alcântara, Rocha de Conde d’Óbidos and Santa Apolónia.
  • Lisbon enjoys one of Europe’s mildest capitals, with very warm, very sunny summers and mild, wet winters. Come July and August maximum average temperatures get close to 30°C, while during winter they’re rarely below 15°C. September is lovely because the sea is warm, but this is really a great city to visit all year round, with plenty of sunshine. The city's Mardi Gras celebrations are also a wonderful experience, as are the many street fiestas held in June.
