About Lisbon

Lisbon is a vibrant city of charm and colour, filled with melancholic fado music and the characteristic rattling of yellow trams as they trundle past decorative tiled façades. A capital since its conquest from the Moors in 1147, it suffered a devastating earthquake in 1755, which resulted in much of the centre being rebuilt and some of the best places to stay in Lisbon are found in this area.

Built across seven hills, Lisbon is an easy city to explore, with plenty of treasures to discover. Take a stroll uphill from the river and you'll come upon grand Gothic cathedrals, nice little museums, pretty palaces and the odd monastery, just as readily as you'll come upon charming cafes and restaurants.

It's a relatively friendly place, with plenty of well-used public baths and a whole district full of music venues where you can hear everything from fado, to reggae to electronica.

This is also a city on the ocean, which keeps things balmy, and Lisbon is probably one of Europe's warmest winter city break destinations. Summer is obviously very hot and busy so if you want to ensure a bed in one of the best places to stay in Lisbon, you'll need to plan well ahead.

Where To Stay

If you’re travelling to Lisbon for the food and the culture, graceful Baixa is probably one of the best places to stay.  This district was completely rebuilt after the earthquake in the 18th century, in a rather grand, neo-classical style.  If you’re here for the city’s history, the oldest part of Lisbon is the Alfama district, a Moorish maze of cobbled alleyways opening onto tiny squares with fountains and flowers.  This area surrounds the cathedral and the castle of St. George, but it’s far from touristy.

Chiado is the artist’s quarter, with elegant Art Nouveau era cafes, beautiful Belle-Époque buildings and some of the best restaurants in Lisbon.  Around the boulevard Avenida da Liberdade is Lisbon’s commercial district, where you’ll find the designer shops, the old funicular and some of the best places to stay in Lisbon.  And if you’re looking for a peaceful district, consider Belém, which is at the river mouth, just outside of the centre of town.

What Not To Miss

  • The Castle of Saint George sits atop the highest of Lisbon's seven hills overlooking the Rio Tejo, which rises from the old Moorish quarter of Alfama - a labyrinth of narrow cobbled streets. This is a perfect spot for watching the sunset, but also probably one of Lisbon's highlights.

  • The neighbourhood of Belém, at the mouth of the Tagus River, is another top destination packed with monuments and must-sees. This is where famous Portuguese explorers, such as Vasco de Gama, set sail from. It is also where the Jerónimos Monastery stands as a reminder of Portugal's power and wealth during the Age of Discovery.

  • Lisbon is home to a number of interesting museums (such as the Gulbenkian), as well as parks, gardens and monuments - including the twin bridge of the Golden Gate Bridge.

The Hotel Guru's pick of the best places to stay in Lisbon vary from excellent value B&Bs to top end luxury for those with deep pockets.

Travel Information

  • Part of the appeal of Lisbon is that it’s easy to get to. You can fly into Lisbon Portela (LS), which is 6.5kms from the city, close to Loures. The centre of town is about 25 minutes from the airport and there are easy public transport options: there is a metro line which will take you straight to the centre and all around Lisbon, whilst taxis are amazingly good value and there is a good bus service. Lisbon is also connected to the European rail network, and you can get there in just shy of 24 hours via Paris. Slightly more surprising, to me at least, is that Lisbon is a busy port and there are three cruise ship terminals: Alcântara, Rocha de Conde d’Óbidos and Santa Apolónia.

Lisbon is one of Europe’s mildest capitals, with very warm, very sunny summers and mild, wet winters. Come July and August maximum average temperatures get close to 30°C , while during winter they’re rarely below 15°C . September is lovely because the sea is warm, but this is really a great city to visit all year round, with plenty of sunshine. The city's Mardi Gras celebrations are also a wonderful experience, as are the many street fiestas held in June.

For car hire prices, we recommend you visit our online partner Holiday Autos.
