Business travel meets downtown grit, ideal for young professionals who want personality alongside productivity. Hi-tech bedrooms are compact, but perfectly facilitate binge-working or binge-watching (the garment steamer is a godsend in a city this fast). Try the 24/7 fitness centre and weekly gym classes (Polve is favoured by Jennifer Aniston, no less) to beat jet lag. Beds are crisp and comfy, but if sleep evades you, Alphabet Bar & Café doubles as a vinyl library curated by neighbourhood institution Academy Records, so browse free LPs while chugging complimentary morning coffee.

Downstairs, Cathédrale's soaring triple-height dining room features a staggering 26-foot wire mesh sculpture paying homage to the Fillmore East - the legendary Church of Rock 'n' Roll. The food is exquisite - go for the entrecôte au poivre with escargot butter and pommes frites, and don't miss oysters and champagne happy hour Sunday to Friday. Conveniently positioned for exploring downtown Manhattan after slamming your laptop shut, this is a lively city hotel with real buzz.
