Hotel review

A perfect day in Bali is one spent at The Legian Seminyak. Guests wake in four-poster beds in their parquet-floored suites, greeted by Indonesian shadow-puppet figures and other local artworks on the walls. They wander languorously down the ziggurat stone staircases to the open-air restaurant to an indulgent breakfast of exotic salads, local classics such as gado gado, homemade jams (the guava is a must) and a European deli’s worth of cheese laid out in a special chilled room. Then it’s the arduous task of choosing a poolside perch for the day: solo lounger or couple’s day-bed? Either way, one of the delightful staff will be close by to lay down soft towels and pour glasses of ice-cold, mint-infused water.

The hotel has three pools, which step down gracefully from the restaurant to the beach. Surrounding them are lush tropical gardens with fragrant frangipanis and miniature Balinese stone temples sitting in tranquil ponds. The staff distribute free afternoon tea around 4pm and, an hour or two later, light large, stone fire-bowls, which throw flames into the evening sky. At the restaurant, guests dine by moonlight on delights such as squid ink risotto and baked snapper in banana leaf—and look forward to doing it all again the next day.
