“Beautiful 19th-century Indo-Portuguese dwellings and three luxury tents set on a tranquil, palm-studded stretch between a saltwater creek & the Indian Ocean. Terracotta walls, cobalt blue bathrooms & muslin-draped four posters await at this family-owned bohemian haven.”

Hotel review

Still in the hands of the descendants of the Anjelo Zeferino Sequeira, who bought this spit of sandy land in 1886, Elsewhere is utterly magical. Crossing a narrow bamboo bridge over the saltwater creek, guests are ensconced in a tranquil world of swaying palm trees, towering banyans, and gorgeous terracotta and ochre-painted dwellings with classic colonnaded terraces and glorious ocean views.

Choose from one of five beach houses — some of which have multiple bedrooms — or the three pretty tented rooms which face the creek. The Priest's House (once home to Padre Luis Gonzaga de Santana Sequeira, who paddled across to Mandrem Church for mass) sleeps up to six guests; as does the Captain's House. Romantics can hide away in the charming Bakery or the Creek House. In each case, characterful houses have big antique beds, writing desks and honesty bars with Indian wine, as well as quirky bathrooms and daybeds on shaded terraces. Tents are air-conditioned and similarly furnished, but with views towards the creek rather than the Indian Ocean.

Expect generous breakfasts and superb dinners of Goan specialities, including mouth-watering seafood curries and freshly baked breads. Wander up sandy paths to dine in the communal tent, feast on your private terrace, or kick back at a little table under the enormous banyan tree.

Days are spent reading in the shade, ambling along the vast golden sands of Mandrem Beach, or on excursions to visit North Goa's striking small towns, including lovely Siolim and the excellent independent bookshop in lively Calangute, which hosts regular literary events.

A very special escape for honeymooners, groups of friends or solo travellers seeking solitude in a marvellous corner of Goa.
