“Perched high up above the northern fishing village of Fiskardo is this family-run boutique hotel offering peace, charm and authenticity.”

Hotel review

Almyra, meaning ‘the sensation of the salt water of the sea’, is a perfect boutique size. It has an imposing, impressive façade and yet it is intimate, well-designed and ideal for its staple clientele of couples who typically bring their children in August. It opened in 2002 as a family concern which gives the place real heart. Indeed it’s run with grace and charm by the classy and educated owners Elina and her husband Polychronis. All are affectionate and reassuring to their new guests who are treated as an extension to their family.

Across three floors the rooms are tasteful and spacious: each with an outdoor balcony. The reception comes with its own stylish shop. The menu in the restaurant is a combination of British and Greek tastes. The furnishing in the large sitting room is modern and chic with well-stocked coffee table books on all you could hope to learn of Greece, the Ionian Sea, Kefalonia and Fiskardo respectively. Thankfully the hotel has no gaudy paintings allowing the view to say it all. A view that overlooks the swimming pool, the sea beyond and Ithaca further into the distance, not to mention the magnificent dawn, sunset and starlit nights.

There’s a minibus shuttle taking five minutes to deliver and collect from the harbour at Fiskardo. Otherwise it’s a twenty-minute descent by foot to its delightful restaurants. The area around Fiskardo is also a walker’s paradise for anyone wanting the ultimate recluse amongst the water’s edge from Emblisi beach round the shoreline to Kimilia beach.
