Instant charm is rarer than it sounds, and The Pergola has it in abundance, the sort of place you immediately want to send friends to. Before we'd even made it to our room, we were swapping books with the receptionist. Truly boutique and homely, it's entirely itself.

The building has a story worth knowing: in 1925, a Lisbon arts lover bought two chalets on one of Cascais' finest streets, one for each of his daughters. The garden between them, French-inspired with boxwood flowerbeds and tile-lined benches, was tended by his daughter Piedade. Her son opened it to the public in 1985, making The Pergola tourist permit number one at the Town Hall. The house remains furnished almost exactly as Piedade left it: iron staircases with gilded trim, hand-painted tile walls, crystal chandeliers, period furniture and a Moura Girão rooster presiding over the salon.

The 15 rooms are intimate and contemporary, with coffee machines and hardbacks. The garden, all sea air and floral scent, has to be the prettiest here. Bougain Restaurant and Garden Bar, from the same owners as Lisbon's celebrated Café de São Bento, was buzzing even on a blustery Tuesday evening, gas heaters keeping guests warm: steak tartare finished tableside, fresh Setúbal oysters, Sole à la Meunière, Chateaubriand with Béarnaise. Beyond the gate, Cascais delivers beaches within walking distance, world-class golf on the doorstep, Sintra and Lisbon close by. The Pergola makes an ideal base, though the garden makes leaving feel unnecessary.
