“Un gruppo di edifici che si affacciano sul Parco Naturale delle Montagne di Las Ubiñas. Camere minimaliste emanano semplicità rurale con travi a vista e pareti in pietra; alcune con camino e vasca da bagno indipendente. C'è un affascinante bistrot e bar, oltre a sauna e piscina a sfioro. Il luogo perfetto per ricaricarsi e rilassarsi.”

Le nostre recensioni

The road to Solo Palacio winds, up and up, along dramatic mountainsides, past dark green forests and through quiet hill villages. On clear days, craggy peaks rise against distant blue skies; when the mist descends, the twists and turns are enveloped in cloud and only the low, verdant hills remain visible.

Long home to a powerful Asturian family whose crest still faces the entrance to the grounds, Solo Palacio comes into view at the last moment. Perched on the edge of a small hamlet, this collection of wood and stone buildings dates back five centuries. Painstakingly preserved by a visionary team, the ancient manor house reopened as a sensational hotel in mid-2023.

Arriving at Solo Palacio is, in many ways, like stepping back in time. A stilted panera - traditionally used for storing grain - sits between terracotta-tiled buildings, worn flagstones frame fragrant lavender beds, and exposed beams hold bedroom ceilings aloft. Understated spaces feel rustic yet elegant, with soft linens, carved wooden armchairs, big photography books and fireplaces just waiting to be lit. Embodying the principles of wabi sabi, the hotel has been designed to celebrate simplicity, imperfection and the belief that all grows more beautiful with time.

Ensconced in one of the hotel's 11 wonderful rooms, lofts or apartments, it's impossible not to agree. Thoughtfully curated spaces showcase Asian antiques, handmade pottery and museum-quality curios. Some rooms feature freestanding bathtubs; others offer showers tucked cleverly within existing nooks. Concrete kitchenettes invite independence, and worn wooden casements surround marvellous mountain views. In each instance, guests are encouraged to revel in the pared-back beauty of the past, whilst enjoying the luxuries of a boutique bolthole in the present.

Slow mornings will delight foodies. Rise slowly, or enjoy an early morning hike before returning to the restaurant for fresh fruit, warm croissants, scrambled eggs and a vast array of homemade cakes and jams. Locally sourced yogurt drizzled with honey, tomatoes topped with flaky black salt and Asturian cheeses are all highlights.

Spend your days following trails on foot or by bicycle, embark upon horse riding, kayaking and canyoning adventures, or book the wellness space to unwind in the hot tub and sauna. Views from the refreshing infinity pool are dazzling — it's worth sinking into a sun lounger with a book even in the cooler months. The building of the pool itself reflects the team's commitment to historic preservation; opinions were sought from both villagers as well as heritage authorities before the crescent-shaped pool was added alongside an ancient boundary wall. Speak to Carlos and his team for insights into the story and creation of the hotel; their commitment to detail is laudable.

Come evening, gather with fellow guests for award-winning regional cider or a crisp glass of wine at the bar. The craft cocktails are exceptional; particularly the rum with hazelnut and rosemary, and the gin with piparra and mint. As with everything at Solo Palacio, magic lies in the seemingly effortless creation of something both simple and unique.

In partnership with the Michelin-starred Monte restaurant, Solo X Monte Bistró offers delicious dinners inspired by regional specialities from Thursday to Sunday (or Monday, depending on the season). Feast on cheese fondue or a generous platter of acorn-fed Iberico ham, tuck in to lamb cannelloni or savour flaky cod in beurre blanc. The famed Monte cheesecake is a joy.

Activities abound in this dramatic corner of Las Urbiñas National Park. It's all too tempting, however, to simply remain here, soaking up the magic of Solo Palacio from the gardens, cocktail in hand, or to curl up by the fire in your room. In a world which whirls endlessly, this exquisite hideaway promises a rare moment of calm.
