About Puerto Varas

Puerto Varas is to be found in the Los Lagos region of southern Chile. It is a popular tourist destination and the best places to stay in Puerto Varas provide a great base to take full advantage of the many attractions and activities on offer.

Also known as ‘The city of roses’, Puerto Varas was founded as a settlement for German colonists in the mid nineteenth century. Much of the original architecture is still there and is now part of the town's heritage zone. The Sacred heart of Jesus church which was built in1915 is a notable landmark and worth a visit. There are also museums and galleries; The Antonio Felmer Museum, Molino Machmar Art centre and Nativo Bosque Gallery to name a few. Germanic influences are also reflected in the local food and drink with craft beers, pastries, cakes, chocolate etc.

The main draw of this area, however, is its incredible natural beauty. There are crystal clear lakes, snow capped mountains (with volcanoes!) and forests which are home to all manner of flora and fauna. This is an adventure tourist's heaven. You can ski and snowboard in the winter and trek, raft, kayak, flyfish... (the list goes on) in summer. Further afield there are various national parks to explore on day trips. This is also the ideal starting point for crossing the Andes by bus and boat.
