About Pont-Aven

Taking its name from the picturesque river that runs through it, Pont-Aven is a charming town in Brittany. Perhaps best known for its association with French post-impressionist painter Paul Gauguin. It's easy to see why Gauguin was so taken by the place with its delightful architecture and beautiful river setting. Today, the town's artistic culture still prevails with a vibrant annual summer festival. The best places to stay in Pont-Aven tend to be lovely, small-scale boutiques.

Things not to miss:

  • See the town through Gauguin's eyes. Go on a tour of the artist's favourite painting spots.
  • The Musée des Beaux-Arts contains a fine collection of artwork from Gauguin and his contemporaries Emile Bernard and Paul Serusier, who became known as the 'Ecole de Pont-Aven'.
  • There are lovely walks along the River Aven, the best of which is the Promenade Xavier Grall.
  • If you are there at the start of August, don't miss the Fête des Fleurs d’Ajoncs.

The town attracts visitors from all over the world, so if you are going in the summer and want to ensure a spot at one of the best places to stay in Pont-Aven, then get organised and book well ahead.
