About Gelderland

The largest of the provinces in the Netherlands, Gelderland stretches from the centre of the country to the eastern border with Germany. A diverse land of rolling heaths and forests, winding rivers and striking medieval cities, the region will fascinate heritage aficionados and nature lovers alike. The best places to stay in Gelderland are also immensely varied, ranging from cool, contemporary forest chalets to restored monasteries in centuries-old cobbled towns. Whether you’re travelling solo, as a couple or with friends and family, you’ll find plenty to discover across the province.

Arnhem, Gelderland’s regional capital, is a fascinating historic city. A key Second World War site, the city is also home to the famed Kröller-Müller Museum, which houses an impressive collection of works by Van Gogh — and an extensive sculpture garden. Other highlights include the Roman ruins and buzzy university vibe of Nijmegen, the medieval heart of Zutphen, and the charm of pretty Otterlo, on the edge of the Veluwe.

The Veluwezoom National Park is reason enough to visit Gelderland. Verdant forests, vast heathlands and sandy dunes are home to a plethora of birds, deer and wild boar. Criss-crossed with hiking, cycling and horse riding trails, these landscapes are ideal for keen explorers to discover at their own pace. Kayaking opportunities and boat trips on smaller streams or the larger Rhine, Waal, and IJssel rivers are also very special, and can easily be arranged through the best places to stay in Gelderland.
