The Best Hotels in Nihonbashi, Tokyo
If you’re looking for somewhere to stay in Tokyo that’s a bit quieter and less skyscraper-y, you might like Nihonbashi. There are still shiny office buildings and retail complexes, but this is where the city of Tokyo really started, and the area is still full of generations old businesses doing charming, old fashioned sorts of business, like selling fabric, seaweed or fans. Nihonbashi spread out around the bridge with the same name, which has linked the two sides of the Nihonbashi River since 1603. You can see a to scale replica of the original wooden bridge in the Edo-Tokyo Museum. The Mitsui family, of Mitsukoshi fame, helped build up the area and this is where they built their flagship department store. This is also where the fish market was located before it moved to its current spot in Tsukiji.
Nihonbashi is also where you’ll find the Tokyo Stock Exchange, and the ‘zero kilometre’ marker for all of Japan. The Coredo Muromachi complex is another local highlight: three elegant skyscrapers full of shopping and dining options in a modern design inspired by the design of the Edo period.
