9 Best B&Bs on Martha’s Vineyard

The Christopher

Martha’s Vineyard is a picturesque island escape, probably best known for “Jaws”, its sandy vistas, and for its complete lack of chain restaurants. With that in mind you can probably imagine that there’s a lot of competition for the best B&Bs on Martha’s Vineyard, because there’s a lot of independent, really personal accommodation, and a lot of it is excellent! Our Gurus worked hard comparing ocean views, cosy linens and gourmet breakfasts to being you this list of the best B&Bs on Martha’s Vineyard.

For a Beach Break

The Christopher

  • The Christopher’s vibrant, confident interiors are a charming contrast to its staid-but-elegant, Victorian exterior. This classic Edgartown mansion has been completely reimagined into a bright, 15 room B&B. Each of the rooms is unique, featuring original art and a range of colour schemes. A hearty breakfast and evening snacks are served in the courtyard, and there’s a friendly sitting room too. They have lots of spare beach towels if you’ve forgotten to bring one.

For Island Chic

The Edgartown Inn

  • The Edgartown Inn is a cool, contemporary choice, with boutique hotel-style interiors in a sophisticated grey palette. Converted from a the white-clapboard home of a whaling captain, the B&B now has 12 rooms, a light and airy breakfast room, a sitting room and a gorgeous porch. And all about a ten minute walk from Lighthouse Beach.
  • The Richard is a hybrid boutique hotel/B&B, converted from a classic clapboard mansion. The original large windows set the tone for this light, bright pick, and simple, contemporary decor makes each of the 16 rooms feel fresh and spacious — the decor is different in each room, and some are more traditionally New England than others. The garden has colourful outcrop furniture and a fire pit.

For Romantics

Ashley Inn

  • The Ashley Inn has been carefully converted from a 19th century Captain’s home, into a ten room B&B, while retaining the old-world charm and many of the original features. Expect four-poster beds, wooden floors, fireplaces and period details, against a traditional, nautical backdrop. Guests are also welcome in the library, the tea room and the gardens. Bliss.

For Families

Dockside Inn

  • The Dockside Inn is a grand and elegant 21 room B&B in a fantastic spot — beside the docks. The decor is cosily contemporary, and all the rooms have large windows and open out onto a shared terrace with water views. There’s also a shared hot tub and sauna, and a generous range of complimentary snacks, including ice cream and home-made cookies. There’s lots of paraphernalia for families, and you’re just 200 metres from Oak Bluffs Town Beach.

For Couples

Nonnocket Boutique Inn

  • The Nobnocket Boutique Inn is a chic, owner-managed B&B. Its seven ensuite rooms and suites are elegantly decorated, featuring wooden floors and lots of white, and there’s a charming sitting room with an open fire to relax in too. Breakfast is served in the sunny dining room, or in your room. A stylish pick close to the village and the beach.
  • Converted from a Captan’s house, built in 1892, The Sydney is a 22 room B&B in the heart of Edgartown. Eight rooms are in the original house, and 14 in an adjacent, newer block. The decor is cheerful, and, unusual for a B&B, there’s a lively little restaurant. This is a great base, within walking distance of the beach and lots of other attractions.

For an Island Escape

Beach Plum Inn

  • The Beach Plum Inn is a collection of sea-facing bungalows that have been hosting guests since the 1950s, and offer peace, comfort and charm in a pastel colour scheme. The decor is classic Massachusetts: clapboard walls and wood furniture. You can self-cater, but breakfast is served in a charming little dining room, and they offer pop-up dinners by local chefs in season.

For Great Value

Mansion House

  • Mansion House is a charming New England style clapboard mansion overlooking the harbour — especially from its higher floors! There are ample porches and balconies to make the most of the sun and sea views, and some of the 48 rooms and suites have private balconies. The decor is cosy and homely, with huge windows and hardwood floors. A really affordable way to capture that island holiday feeling.
