A small island off the coast of Kenya (and the main part of the Lamu archipelago), Lamu is a place of great beauty and tranquility, a haven for artists and writers and it is a wonderful destination for a romantic break or family holiday. With its white sandy beaches, colourful coral reefs and ancient Swahili culture, Lamu is a wonderful place to unwind. My pick of the best places to stay in Lamu are all ideally located for soaking up the island’s charms; the majority are small intimate resorts, but I've also managed to track down a couple of charming little hotels.
Lamu is a fascinating island off Kenya’s north coast, where centuries-old Swahili architecture and winding lanes give way to long white sand beaches and clear waters teeming with life. The best places to stay are wonderfully laid-back beach retreats, from romantic island hideaways to characterful hotels in historic Shela. For a classic Lamu experience, Peponi is the standout, with its beachfront setting, intimate atmosphere, Arabian-inspired rooms, poolside dining and famously lively Fisherman’s Bar. It’s been a Lamu favourite for years, and its location makes it extremely hard to beat.
