Rajasthan’s captivating capital, Jaipur has long been synonymous with visions of magnificent palaces, beautiful block printed fabrics and timeless glamour. A brilliant springboard for a wider trip through northern India, the city brims with fabulous accommodation options. Our Gurus’ recommendations of the best places to stay in Jaipur range from old-school havelis to spectacular five-star hotels surrounded by landscaped gardens. With a population of almost four million, the city has a terrific buzz — and many travellers return again and again!
Jaipur’s old town has been known as ‘The Pink City’ since 1897, when Maharaja Jai Singh ordered it painted a warm terracotta-pink ahead of a visit by the then Prince of Wales. Still largely surrounded by high walls and accessed through four main gates, this quarter’s wide streets are lined with striking architectural landmarks, as well as bustling bazaars, shops and eateries. Head to Batu Bazaar for textiles, Johari Bazaar for jewellery and Tripolia Bazaar for pottery and sculptures. Heritage aficionados will be thrilled to tour the 18th century City Palace and surrounding museums, just around the corner from the iconic Hawa Mahal.
Delve further into Jaipur’s history at the Albert Hall Museum or the Armapali Museum. The hilltop Amber Fort is hugely impressive and well worth the drive; as are the nearby Jaigarh and Nahargarh. If you’re a fan of craft and textiles, look no further than the Anokhi Museum of Block Printing, whilst wildlife enthusiasts should make a beeline for the Jhalana Leopard Park. The roads are frantic, the city chaotic and colourful, and the charm almost endless: Jaipur is undoubtedly a gem. Book your trip well in advance to guarantee a room at one of the best places to stay in Jaipur — particularly if travelling during the legendary Literature Festival in January.
