The Best Places to Stay in Rome
In Celio
- Capo d'Africa is a sleek, contemporary hotel with a gorgeous roof terrace directly overlooking the Colosseum. Not only are you right in the heart of things, you're staying somewhere stylish. It also has an excellent gym, restaurant and bar.
By The Spanish Steps
- Crossing Condotti has just six rooms filled with well chosen Baroque antiques, tasteful art and enormous beds, and it's right beside the Spanish Steps: an oasis of privacy and luxury. Central, sophisticated and superbly romantic, with decor that's a happy marriage between traditional elegance and a modern canvas. They also have a friendly concierge service.
- Margutta 54 is a bit different, a sleek collection of six suites with all the mod. cons. which can cater to all types of travellers.
For The Pantheon and the Piazza Navona
- Less than five minutes walk from the Pantheon and Piazza Navona, you'll find the Relais Rione Ponte. It's a small boutique hotel that won't break the bank, yet boasts five star amenities and a fabulous permanent art exhibition.
- G-Rough is one of the hippest hotels in Rome. Located a stone's throw from the Piazza Navona, it's been converted from from a 17th century townhouse, and the parquet floors and original tiles in the ten rooms have been retained, but they’ve added retro design furniture and exposed stone walls and the effect is chic yet modern. There’s also a fantastic roof terrace and a buzzy bar.
- The Gigli d’Oro Suites are a sophisticated collection of six designer suites converted from a rather aristocratic looking residence. The decor is super modern, with whitewashed walls and glass bathrooms, but those details, and the designer furniture, are in contrast to the parquet floors, wooden beams and oil paintings.
For the Campo de' Fiori and the Piazza Farnese
- The Hotel Campo de 'Fiori has a fantastic roof terrace overlooking the city skyline. You'll find romantic bedrooms with four poster beds, regally painted walls and frescoed ceilings. And you're in a great location, close to the morning markets.
For Monti
- An elegant, townhouse style hotel with 15 stylish rooms and an unpretentious feel, The Fifteen Keys Hotel is perfectly located in bohemian Monti, close to great antique boutiques and great cafes. They serve breakfasts alfresco in a charming garden courtyard.
For Testaccio
- The Althea Inn is a secluded, penthouse B&B with three spacious, white-washed rooms with simple decor. The real pleasures are the private, flower-filed balconies - perfect for enjoying an apertivo while the sun goes down over spectacular Rome.
For the Aventine Hill
- The Corner hotel is a beautiful Art Nouveau townhouse on Viale Aventino, the main road that connects Piazza di Porta Capena and Piazza Albania. Well-located for exploring the sights, it sits just outside of the busiest tourist areas. Beautifully restored to retain many original features, The Corner has oak herringbone flooring and marble fireplaces, and is split over three floors, accessible via a lift. The hotel's ten rooms have a pared-back feel in spite of the rich colour palettes.
For a Special Occasion
-
San Anselmo's Baroque flamboyance and lavish drapery will transport you back in time to another era. Situated in the smart Aventine district which overlooks the city, you can enjoy breakfasts in the beautifully tended garden and plan out your day as if the city were a map.
-
The Eden provides the ultimate five star luxury city experience, with opulent interiors, elegant suites and an exclusive address. And a long history of accommodating celebrity guests. Rooms have traditional decor and incredible views, but most of them not as good as those from the fine dining rooftop restaurant.
For a City Break
-
You'll find the Baglioni Hotel Regina on the Via Veneto, dripping with Art Deco opulence. One of Rome's original grande dame hotels, this extravagant offering promises to be a truly memorable stay, with luxurious accommodation: think high gloss black marble and fabric walls. The restaurant is an event too.
-
The Palazzo Ripetta is a great choice for a supremely comfortable boutque stay in the heart of the old city, close to all the central sights. With its excellent restaurant, charming courtyard garden, and generously sized rooms (with Ortigia product and Fretee linens), this is one to splash out on.
-
Or you might try the Hotel de Russie which has another lovely courtyard and garden, complete with lemon trees, and light, airy rooms, and a spa and pool — despite being in the centre of town. The restaurant is excellent too, and you're close to the Piazza del Popolo and 10 mins from the Spanish Steps.
-
Boutique, sleek, stylish and centrally located, Spagna Royal Suite has it all. Located less than a mile from most of the sights, this is a superb option for a chic city stay.
Rome's Best B&Bs and Guesthouses
-
Casa Montani is a gorgeous little guesthouse right on the Piazza del Popolo, and just five minutes walk from the Spanish Steps. Here there are a handful of beautifully finished rooms and suites all overseen by helpful owners, Giuseppe and Charlotte. The property is family friendly and there's also a little apartment for four - perfect for families or small groups.
-
The Residenze Torre Colonna is a fantastically chic boutique guesthouse with a rooftop terrace offering spectacular views over Rome. There are just five rooms, all of them romantic, with four poster beds, white washed walls and splashes of modern art.
For families
-
The Albergo del Senato offers a range of elegant rooms and suites, including triples and apartments which are ideal for families, within a short stroll of the Pantheon. There's a fabulous roof terrace and a traditional, relaxed vibe throughout, despite the beautiful decor.
-
Mario de Fiori 37 is a collection of sleek, modern self-catering suites and apartments, right near the Spanish Steps. The best one, on the top floor, has a giant bed nestled in the roof. Whichever room you're in you'll find every comfort and modern gadget you, or your family, might need, plus glossy parquet floors, solid Italian furniture, and shiny bathrooms.

Travel Information
- Rome has two airports, the main one is the Leonardo da Vinci Airport in Fiumicino, which is about 35minutes from the centre of town by train, from platforms right next to the main departures and arrivals hall. The second option is Ciampino Airport, which is used primarily by the low cost carriers, but is actually closer to the centre of town, but not so well connected by public transport. There’s a capped price for taxis into the centre of Rome from Ciampino. Rome is also easy to arrive in by train, into either Roma Termini, which is the central station, or Roma Tiburtina, which is just outside.
- If you’re thinking about hiring a car we recommend checking what our online partners, Rentalcars have to offer.
- Summer is the busiest time in Rome for visitors, but that’s not because this is when to expect the best weather. Rome’s climate is Mediterranean, so the summers are hot and sunny, with the buildings, elegant and impressive as they are, keeping out some of the breezes that make it pleasant, so the average daily maximum for the hottest month, July, is 32°C. Autumn is cooler and more pleasant, but the end of autumn and beginning of winter are when you can expect the most rainfall. Winter is generally mild though, and Rome is a magical place to be around Christmas and New Year. Spring is warm, dry and sunny, and this is probably when you’ll find the ‘best’ weather.
Still not sure which is the best place to stay in Rome for you?
- You could refine your search to just the best places to stay near the Spanish Steps? or the 10 Best Hotels near the Vatican? or the 10 Best Hotels near the Pantheon?
- Or you could refine by location, and just see the 4 best hotels in Trastevere? or the 3 best hotels near the Aventine Hill?
