Baqueira

Baqueira is one of the resort towns in the Baqueira-Beret-Bonaigua ski resort in the Spanish Pyrenees. Spain doesn’t have the skiing credentials of other European nations, but Baqueira is a great resort by any standards. The main resort is high enough to get a decent snow coverage, with the highest lift reaching 2,516metres. There are around 150kms worth of groomed runs, and lots of long ones, plus plenty of off piste terrain, and there’s more than 1000metres of vertical drop. There are also numerous pretty hamlets, the food is Catalonian, and the lifestyle very Spanish. Baqueira is a great place to try heli-skiing. It’s comparatively affordable and the scenery is just spectacular.

Baqueira itself isn’t the most charming of ski resorts, it dates from the sixties, when convenience and bed numbers were more important than charm, but there are still some cool options, and the atmosphere is excellent.

If you prefer things much quieter, you might even consider staying in one of the local hamlets, some of them pleasingly tucked into the folds of the mountain range. There’s a good bus service between Baqueira and many of these smaller towns and villages.
