Oregon’s largest city has a wonderful town-y charm, from its pretty, varied neighbourhoods to the vibrant city centre. Hipsters and eco-activists abound, and there’s a range of weird and wonderful mash-ups: vegan brewpubs, cycling coffeehouses, brewery bike tours, knitting cafes etc., which make for a lot of friendly fun. Portland is also known for being beautiful and green. The best places to stay in Portland for most visitors will be found in the centre of town, but if you’re looking for something a little different then you might find the best places to stay in Portland in one of the quirkier neighbourhoods.
Portland’s green credentials stretch to an extensive streetcar and light-rail system, so this is a really easy city to get around. There are also numerous beautiful city parks - Forest Park and Washington Park are highlights - and lots of green pockets, and many intersections are designed with pedestrians in mind, so this a great city to see on foot.
Some people know Portland as the Beer and Food Cart Capital of the World - Portland has around 70 microbreweries! And there are around 200 wineries within about an hours drive - so you’ll not go hungry (or thirsty) on your travels around town.
Pioneer Courthouse Square is a good place to start exploring, it’s the centre of town and often referred to as ‘Portland’s living room’, then you might take a walk through the Old Town and China Town, then pass by the Portland Building. You might also like to stroll the Tom McCall Waterfront Park. The Pearl District is a great place to finish your day, this is where you’ll find many galleries, plus restaurants and boutiques.
As far as the main sights go there’s the Portland Art Museum, the Museum of Science and Industry, the Pittock Mansion and the Portlandia statue - the second largest in the US, after the Statue of Liberty. And you might also be interested in getting underground and exploring the tunnels which link up the basements of the bars and hotels in the Old Town and down to the docks.
Our pick of the best places to stay in Portland are ideally located in the centre of town, and all provide a great base whether you're here for business or leisure.
