Telluride is a little different from your typical Colorado ski resort. Tucked into a dramatic canyon in Colorado’s San Juan Mountains, it has colourful old mining buildings, independent shops and great restaurants, all surrounded by towering peaks. Places to stay range from historic inns full of character to luxurious ski-in/ski-out resorts in Mountain Village. Madeline Hotel is the standout for a luxury stay, with direct slope access, a superb spa and lots to keep the whole family happy. For something smaller and more personal, Dunton Town House has lovely interiors and a great spot near the gondola.

There’s far more to Telluride than skiing, although the slopes are a pretty good reason to visit. Travel Information

• Fly to Telluride Regional Airport, close to town, or to Montrose Regional Airport, 1.5 hours' drive away.

• Visit between December and March for the best skiing. Telluride’s high altitude and north-facing slopes mean that the snow lasts well into March. For skiing without the crowds, aim for mid-to-late January, when most people find it too tricky to take time off for a long weekend. To experience the mountains in the summer months, come between June and September.
