RAAS Chhatrasagar might be a camp but it's certainly not camping as you know it. Situated on the site of an old traditional pop-up camp, this new camp which opened in November 2019 has sixteen luxury tents (including 4 family tents and 2 twins) all of which overlook the east side of the lake with private outdoor terraces. Lined with hand-embroidered fabrics featuring local fauna and birds, the tents are large and luxurious with en-suite marble bathrooms featuring modern free-standing baths and large walk-in showers. Beds are vast and each tent is protected from bugs and mosquitoes by secure netting and bug catchers. The dining area is the hub of the camp over looking the lake with an outdoor terrace and is where you check in at a leisurely pace accompanied by a long, cold drink of your choice.
A paradise for nature-lovers, RAAS Chhatrasagar has its own naturalists who will accompany you to explore the estate, local temples, village and farm. Wild boar, owls, peacocks and blue bull are just some of the wildlife you'll come across. Wake up early and enjoy the sunrise from your verandah and finish the day with a sundowner around a blazing fire under a canopy of stars. You can even enjoy star-gazing from your bed with a huge skylight, controlled by a switch, directly above. No TVs or music in the rooms.
The camp is one of the few that is open year-round and the infinity pool is constantly heated to 29 degrees to ensure an enjoyable dip whatever the weather.
The organic food here is exceptional with meals made using traditional family recipes from Rajasthan. International dishes as well as Thai and local specialities are also on the menu using vegetables directly from the camp's organic garden or from the local villagers. Ladies from the village work at the camp and whilst I was there they were laying a new outdoor floor using the traditional method of brushing on cow dung, allowing it to dry and then decorating it.
The perfect base for a couple of nights on the way to Jodphur and an authentic luxury camp experience for nature lovers and those wanting a few days of rest and relaxation.
