In the Malay language, ruma means home, and this hotel in Kuala Lumpur’s city centre has the dark and golden tones that impart a pleasant lived-in mood; an attempt through design to reinterpret Malaysia’s colonial past. To do so, they lean heavily into local, handmade crafts: the furniture in the rooms is handmade, as are the handwoven checkered patterns, called kelarai, that cover the walls.
What the rooms lack in space is made up for on the 6th floor, where the pool and pool bar are found. RuMa can look somewhat quaint amidst all the towering glass of Kuala Lumpur’s Golden Triangle, but what it lacks in unobstructed views (a sliver of the Petronas Towers can still be viewed from most north-facing rooms), it makes up for with a cloistered warmth; the water juts out into a slice of all-day sun, and wicker pods provide a nice element of privacy.
The ATAS, a smart-casual restaurant where breakfast is also served, has an open kitchen, and encourages guests to watch their Malaysian food being made; on Sundays, they do an incredible seafood buffet. In the lobby bar, seven is the number: seventy-seven types of gin from around the world, seven varieties of tonic, and the signature cocktail garnished with seven spices, fruits, and herbs.
Other amenities of note include a library and, just off the spa, a barber, an outpost of London barber Truefitt & Hill, that bills itself rather cheekily as “The Oldest Barber in the World in Malaysia.”
