“A collection of historic palaces offering low key luxury in Ciutadella. Muted decors in the rooms and an excellent restaurant using the best of Menorcan produce aim for a little slice of heaven. Off site Casa de Pau gives a taste of rural Menorca. Town and country - the best of both worlds”

Hotel review

Here's an intriguing proposition: a hotel that's actually three converted palaces - Can Faustino, Cal Bisbe and Can Sebastia – each a brief stroll apart scattered within Ciutadella's medieval walls, each with its own pool and library, yet all sharing breakfast and the restaurant in the herringbone-bricked courtyard of Can Faustino. Add a country house, a spa and three boats available for charter, and you've got something rather more ambitious than your average townhouse hotel.

The rooms won't win design awards, but comfortable they are - white walls, simple furnishings, views across typically narrow streets to neighbouring buildings - but therein lies their honesty. This is urban Menorca, not some fabricated resort fantasy. The marble bathrooms, however, prove they haven't skimped entirely: double sinks, rainfall showers, some with freestanding baths.

What elevates Faustino Gran beyond mere competence is attention to detail where it matters. Clefs d'Or concierges who actually know the island. The courtyard restaurant and bar, set amongst olive trees is a genuine oasis of calm, step outside and you are in the heart of the old town with all its buzzing restaurants, tapas bars and designer shops. Then there’s the Casa Pau, a country house with pool and restaurant for those seeking countryside and sea. Three boats bearing charmingly incongruous names - Heloise, Hermine, Ciutadella - for exploring coves inaccessible by land.

It's comfortable without being stuffy, exclusive without being precious, convenient without sacrificing tranquillity. Families, couples, solo travellers - all would find their rhythm here. Not flawless, perhaps, but refreshingly free of the boutique hotel clichés that plague the Mediterranean. Sometimes substance trumps style, and Hotel Faustino Gran understands this rather well.
