Jakes, Treasure Beach, Jamaica: hotel review

Jakes is a low-key and very stylish independent hotel. It exudes an air of tropical calm, and its spa and pretty gardens, make it seem a world away from the island’s high-pressure resort towns.

Pass the dutchie: farm-to-table dining in Jamaica

The dinner is run by Jakes, one of the most progressive hotels in the Caribbean (though non-guests can attend) and is one of several local-community projects it supports. The boutique hotel in the fishing village of Treasure Beach might cultivate a shabby-chic vibe and have supermodels and New York hipsters lounging around its beachside pool, but it is firmly rooted in the local community.

Hotel focus: Jake's, Jamaica

The most glamorous set of beach shacks in the Caribbean, Jake's is on Treasure Beach on the south of the island. It was opened initially in 1991 as a restaurant, and rooms have been added gradually. Each has a different feel but all are awash with colour. There's every type of room, from simple to deeply chic. You won't get TVs or phones but you'll find oodles of romance, from guttering candles to beds covered with mosquito nets. The 45 rooms range from the budget-minded Tiki to the three-bedroom Mussels.
