“A characterful East London pub-with-rooms combining Victorian charm, modern rustic interiors and one of the city’s best rooftop gardens - ideal for travellers seeking a lively yet genuinely local base near Spitalfields and Shoreditch.”

Hotel review

Occupying a handsome Victorian corner building on Commercial Street, The Culpeper sits between Spitalfields, Shoreditch and the City, making it an appealing East London base for travellers wanting equal access to creative neighbourhoods and financial districts alike. Popular areas like Brick Lane and Columbia Road are all within easy reach, while Liverpool Street station is only a short walk away, which is appealing for both weekend visitors and business travellers seeking somewhere quick and easy to stay, with more personality than a conventional City hotel.

At its core, The Culpeper remains a traditional London pub, without over-designed interiors that have been adopted by many boutique hotels in the area. The ground-floor pub is lively drawing a mixed crowd of local residents, creatives and hotel guests throughout the day. Interiors retain a classic East End character with dark timber floors, exposed brickwork, candlelit tables and a relaxed atmosphere that feels genuinely rooted in the neighbourhood rather than curated purely for visitors.

Upstairs, the mood becomes calmer and more residential. With only a small number of rooms, the hotel has an intimate quality, while the decor feels rustic. Reclaimed wood, vintage-style furnishings, muted tones and tactile natural materials create spaces that feel warm and characterful rather than overly polished. Rooms are compact but thoughtfully arranged, with comfortable beds, good natural light and double-glazed windows that soften the noise from the streets below. Bathrooms are small but functional.

The real draw here is the food. The Culpeper’s restaurant has built a strong reputation around seasonal British cooking executed with restraint and confidence. Menus change regularly depending on what is growing and available, including herbs and produce from the rooftop garden itself, reinforcing the kitchen’s ingredient-led approach. During summer months, the rooftop greenhouse restaurant becomes one of the property’s defining features, lending the hotel a distinct urban-farmhouse identity rarely found in central London. Downstairs, the pub menu remains one of the more dependable options in the neighbourhood.

Breakfast is served at nearby sister property The Buxton, just a short walk away (you’ll need to exit the building first though). The offering is simple, but excellent pastries, fresh juices, strong coffee and quality cheeses and charcuterie make it an enjoyable start to the day.

Service throughout is informal but attentive, fitting the hotel’s laid-back atmosphere well. There are few traditional hotel facilities beyond the pub, restaurant and rooftop spaces, though this feels entirely intentional. The Culpeper is less about conventional luxury and more about atmosphere, locality and character - ideal for travellers seeking an authentic and conveniently located East London stay, with great food and a neighbourhood feel.

Why do people love staying at The Culpeper? The Culpeper is a rare thing: a proper East London local that also happens to have beautiful rooms upstairs. Guests love the fact that it's a real, working pub at heart - lively, unpretentious and genuinely rooted in the neighbourhood. Part of The Culpeper Family, a B-Corp certified hospitality group founded by sustainable architects Gareth Roberts and Nico Treguer, everything here - the food, the design, the drinks - has been thought through with real care and purpose. Add an elegant  restaurant, a rooftop woodland garden and a location right between Spitalfields, Shoreditch and the City, and it's somewhere that feels nothing like a conventional hotel.

What is there to do in the area? The Culpeper is brilliantly placed. Spitalfields Market and Brick Lane are on the doorstep, Columbia Road Flower Market is a short stroll on Sunday mornings, and the creative energy of Shoreditch is right around the corner. Liverpool Street station is just a few minutes' walk, putting the whole of London within easy reach - the West End, the South Bank, Borough Market and beyond. For those flying in, London City Airport is only 30 minutes by Underground, and for Eurostar arrivals into St Pancras, it's a quick 20-minute journey. For guests who prefer to stay local, the independent galleries, coffee shops and street food of E1 will keep them busy for days.

What kind of breakfast do you offer? A continental breakfast is included in the stay and served at sister venue The Buxton on Osborn Street - just a three-minute walk away. Choose from freshly baked sourdough and pastries from local bakery Snapery East, local cured meats and cheeses, organic Alara granola and estate dairy yoghurt and seasonal fruit. Items such as organic, gluten free vegan porridge are also available. Breakfast can be taken in the bar or outside on the terrace before the day begins.

Do you offer other meals? And can you recommend good places to eat out locally? Guests won't need to go far. The ground-floor pub serves British classics throughout the day -  think beer-battered haddock and chips or bavette steak baguettes. Upstairs, the first-floor restaurant offers a more considered bistro menu, with seasonal French dishes (a nod to founder Nico’s heritage) that celebrate the British larder such as chicken liver parfait with spiced fig or Monkfish à la Normande, Green Lentils, Monk’s Beard. Menus change regularly, drawing on produce from the group's own 3,500 sq ft urban organic farm south of the river and the rooftop gardens. Sunday roasts have become something of an institution, with a full selection of meats and vegetarian options. The drinks list is equally considered - local craft beers, low-intervention wines and seasonal cocktails throughout.

For eating out nearby, Brat on Redchurch Street is outstanding, Brawn on Columbia Road is wonderful for European small plates, and the Spitalfields and Brick Lane areas offer brilliant independent options at every price point.

Which are your most popular room types, and why? With only five rooms across the upper floors, every stay feels genuinely intimate. Rooms combine exposed plaster walls with soft furnishings and natural materials - simple, comfortable and thoughtfully designed without being over-styled and the rooftop views across East London are a real bonus. Rates start from £185 per night including breakfast, based on two sharing.

What facilities do you have for children, and can you fit extra beds in your rooms? The Culpeper is a pub and restaurant at its core, so it's best suited to older children and adult guests. Families are always welcome to get in touch directly - the team is happy to discuss requirements and do their best to accommodate specific needs. There are some larger rooms that accommodate children. The sister hotel, The Buxton, also has 15 hotel rooms, of varying sizes.

What message would you like to give The Hotel Guru readers? For travellers seeking a central London base with genuine soul and incredible food and drink - The Culpeper delivers. A B-Corp certified group with deep commitments to sourcing, sustainability and the spaces it creates, this is not a hotel that happens to have a pub. It's a pub, a restaurant and a rooftop garden that happens to have five beautiful rooms and some of the best food in E1.
