About Bamburgh

Bamburgh, built around its wonderful castle, once home to the Kings of Northumbria, which sits astride a ridge overlooking the ocean and the quaint village, arranged around a charming green, and in the other direction the Bamburgh Dunes, is one of the jewels of the Northumberland Coast. Our Guru’s picks for the best places to stay in Bamburgh are clustered around the castle, which is one of the prettiest parts of town. But if you’re looking for a base to explore the region more widely then you might be happy to expand your search to include some elegant local country house hotels, welcoming inns, or beachside B&Bs.

The Northumberland Coast is the sort of place you can really feel unfettered. It’s all that space, the long, sandy beaches, rolling green lands, and uninterrupted views. But it’s certainly not empty! It's dotted with pretty towns like Bamburgh. It’s close to Lindisfarne too, and the castle is linked to the Arthurian legends, but the other thing people might specifically chose to visit Bamburgh for is that it’s the birthplace of Grace Darling, the Victorian lighthouse keeper’s daughter who became a national hero after helping rescue wreck survivors.

Don't forget that if you're planning your trip during the peak summer months, this area is very popular. So if you want to ensure a room in one of the best places to stay in Bamburgh, get organised and book well ahead.

The Best Places to Stay in Bamburgh

For a central location

  • The 29 room Victoria Hotel is right in the shadow of Bamburgh Castle, so it’s ideal for seeing the sights in Bamburgh, but also ideal for exploring the whole region. Some rooms have castle views, but some have rural views, giving the feel of a countryside escape. It’s great value too.

Just out of town

  • St Cuthbert’s House was a Presbyterian church, but it’s been beautiful converted into an award-winning B&B, with just six rooms and wonderful coastal surrounds. Staying here is a real escape, cosy and relaxed, with simple, beautiful rooms. Situated in Seahouses (about 3.5 miles along the coast from Bamburgh).

Travel Information

  • Newcastle Airport is the closest airport, and Chathill has the nearest railway station, though if you’re travelling long distance you’ll probably need to travel via Berwick-upon-Tweed or Alnmouth.
  • If you’re thinking about hiring a car we recommend checking what our online partners, Rentalcars have to offer.
  • Most people visit Bamburgh in the summer, when it’s warmest, but the charms of Bamburgh aren’t reliant on warmth, and, on average, there are more sunny days in spring and autumn, so that would probably do just as nicely for most of us.
