About Broadstairs

A classic British seaside town complete with wonderful Victorian architecture and a beautiful bay lined with golden sands, Broadstairs is a hugely appealing destination for a quaint coastal break. Accommodation options are wide-ranging, with an abundance of simple B&Bs in classic Victorian townhouses, as well as some attractive luxury hotels suitable for a range of budgets. Our recommendations for the best places to stay in Broadstairs include striking sea-facing properties, as well as a super-smart contemporary hotel in an old Jacobean gem.

More relaxed and low-key than its famous neighbours, Broadstairs is the perfect destination for a laid-back beach retreat, whether as a couple or a family looking to unwind by the water. Wind your way along streets lined with charming Victorian residences — some of which have been converted into small hotels, independent shops and cafés — or make your way to the harbour for spectacular views. Viking Bay remains the focal point of the town, its beach dotted with couples dozing in the sunshine and children building sandcastles during the summer months. The Bay’s shallow waters are brilliant for refreshing dips, whilst there’s surfing, sailing and sea kayaking to try further out to sea, too. Venture to Joss Bay, Stone Bay or Louisa Bay for cosy picnics and long windswept walks along the sand or atop the chalky cliffs. Ramblers and cyclists with find countless tracks to follow, snaking along the coastline or heading inland, to pretty rural villages with excellent pubs, or to Kent’s many historic sites.

Broadstairs was a favourite with Charles Dickens, who famously spent his summers in the town, and the Dickens House Museum makes for a fascinating visit, whilst the annual Dickens Festival — a week-long extravaganza ending in a fancy-dress ball — is a real highlight. Stroll along the Victorian Promenade and Gardens, discover the Crampton Tower Museum and pop into countless little shops, galleries and eateries for great gifts or to savour the catch of the day. There’s also stacks to see in nearby Margate and Ramsgate, whether you’re interested in history, art or feasting on seasonal Kentish produce.

Whilst most of the best places to stay in Broadstairs are within the town itself, one of our top picks is set right on the beach at nearby Kingsgate, promising impressive views from the elegant bedrooms and the delicious seafood restaurant. An ideal seaside escape!
