“Once the home of the Marquis de Sade, this informal hotel will appeal to those who want scale and grandeur without stuffiness. Couples, families and history lovers can enjoy imagining all the characters who have passed through the walls of this imposing chateau”

Hotel Review

This handsome C18th chateau, situated in the medieval Provencal village of Mazan, has some unexpected surprises. The interior is refreshingly simple and understated for a building of this stature. The feel is charmingly unpretentious with quirky artefacts, exotic textiles and several theatrically dressed mannequins in the corridors that could startle or humour guests. Rooms are light, spacious, uncluttered yet comfortable, with modern bathrooms, some with roll top tubs. Delicious gourmet food is served by informal staff in two adjoining dining rooms with lofty, 5 metre high ceilings. Prior to becoming a hotel, this stately was once occupied by the army, temporarily became a Jesuit school, later a retirement home, however, most intriguing is that it was also the home of the notorious Marquis de Sade. Now owned by a French family, it’s managed warmly by the affable son Frédéric Lhermie whose mother rescued the place from virtual ruin in 2002.
