Opened in the 1930s and a place where British and Indian dignitaries – Mountbattan, Nehru, Gandhi, Jinnah – rubbed shoulders, The Imperial Hotel in Delhi is a legendary heritage hotel, heralded by an avenue of stately palms leading to its entrance.
Modern comforts blend with vintage interiors (marble floors, teak and rosewood furniture, high ceilings) and amongst its many blessings The Imperial is home to a collection of over 4,000 artworks and artifacts, including a highly important collection of the works of Raj-era artists Thomas and William Daniell (ask the curator to take you for a tour). As a tribute to them they have a Pan-Indian restaurant called “Daniell’s Tavern” at exactly the same place from where they had drawn the original Jantar Mantar. The high-ceilinged bedrooms are spacious with huge beds and crisp cotton bed linen; the marble bathrooms are large with bath and shower and plenty of towels. There no tea and coffee making faciilties in the suites, but they're not reallly needed with 24-hour room service and the hotel's 'nothing is too much trouble' attitude.
Home to award-winning restaurants that include pan-Asian dishes at The Spice Route, international cuisine at 1911, Pan-Indian at Daniell’s Tavern and thin crispy pizzas at the Italian San Gimignano, you likely won't have enough time to try them all. 1911 Bar and the Royal Bar-Patiala Peg feature an impressive range of drinks and one of the most extensive wine lists in the city.
Although The Imperial is famous for its Afternoon Tea, The Imperial Spa shouldn't be overlooked, it's actually one of the best in the city with a fantastic choice of western and Ayurvedic treatments on offer as well as a hairdresser and beauty salon, all underground. Plus there's a sauna, steam room and huge mosaiced whirlpool to enjoy before or after your treatment and poignant quotes from Rumi dotted around. It's worth pre-booking before you arrive.
Rich in history, this legendary hotel impresses on every level; stay once, and every stay after that feels like you're coming home. Iconic luxury in the heart of the city.
