About St Émilion

Perched 45 minutes east of Bordeaux in the heart of the Dordogne, Saint-Émilion blends medieval charm with world-famous wine. This UNESCO-listed gem brims with stays to suit every style, with romantic châteaux surrounded by vineyards, chic design hotels in the old town, and cosy family-friendly B&Bs tucked into the rolling countryside. For vineyard views and indulgent spa breaks, stay just outside the village; for easy access to wine bars and restaurants, you'll find the best places to stay in Saint-Émilion clustered in the cobbled old town.

Heritage aficionados will adore ambling along narrow lanes, admiring ivy-draped historic residences, peering at the inscriptions on centuries-old statues, and stepping into smart independent boutiques. Linger over lunch in the sunshine on Place de l’Eglise Monolithique, where a 12th-century limestone church dominates the square, before wandering into the cool shadows of underground tunnels, Romanesque chapels, and the grotto said to be Saint Émilion’s own retreat. The bell tower rises above the town's tiled rooftops, while the Maison du Vin ensures that the region’s rich wine traditions retain centre stage.

Venture into the surrounding countryside to pedal through rolling vineyards, savour wine tours and tastings, glide along the river by boat or explore verdant forests on horseback. Round off days in the wine country with fabulous dining with paired wines at many of the best places to stay in Saint-Émilion -- some of which also boast their own vineyards.
