About Spean Bridge

Spean Bridge is a small village at the southern end of the Great Glen, a narrow Highland valley that runs 100kms from Spean Bridge and Fort William to the edge of the Moray Firth. Visit Scotland promotes it as being one of the major crossroads of the Highlands, but it’s also well known for its atmospheric memorial to the very first British Commando unit, which was formed in 1940, and trained up in this part of Scotland. When it comes to recommending the best places to stay in Spean Bridge, our Gurus are well aware that many visitors are here to walk, climb, mountain bike, play golf, or enjoy similarly energetic, outdoor pursuits, so they’ve prioritised comfort, great food, great local knowledge and a friendly atmosphere.

Spean Bridge is just a few kilometres away from Fort William, which is at the base of Ben Nevis, so hotels here are popular picks for anyone heading up Ben Nevis, or exploring spectacular Glen Nevis, which is also popular with walkers and mountain bikers. Ben Nevis has a couple of challenging stretches close to the peak, but it’s a relatively attainable summit, if you hadn’t thought to attempt it… If you prefer walking on the flat, Spean Bridge is very convenient for the Great Glen Way, and West Highland Way long distance walking trails. As you might have imagined, the views in this part of the world are incredible, so we'd always advise trying to book a room with a view.

As with many outdoorsy destinations in Scotland, the best places to stay in Spean Bridge are extremely busy during the peak summer months. So do your homework and book well ahead.

Travel Information

  • Glasgow Airport is the closest international airport to Spean Bridge — about two hours and twenty minutes away by car or taxi, or about five and half hours away by public transport. Edinburgh International Airport is about two and a half hours drive, or about five and a half hours by public transport, so while it’s physically a bit further away, the travel time is very similar.
  • If you want to hire a car we recommend you visit our online partner, Rentalcars.
  • There’s always a chance of rain in this part of the world, so whatever time of year you choose to visit be prepared for any possible weather combinations. This far north it’s probably the light that makes the most difference to your visit. Closer to mid-Summer the days are a lot longer, so we recommend May through September. This is also when Spean Bridge is busiest — a steady stream of cars pass through during the summer months. If you like it brisk and breezy, which some walkers undoubtedly do, you'll benefit from less competition in the spring and autumn months.
