9 Romantic Seaside Escapes in Sri Lanka (2025)

Sri Lanka has long been a popular honeymoon destination, with beautiful hotels studding the coastline, gorgeous Galle Fort and the dramatic tea-clad slopes of the Hill Country. Choosing your ultimate beach hotel can feel like a challenge, with beautiful boltholes in the lively south of the island, as well as some striking spots tucked on the quieter west and east coasts.

The timing of your trip may impact where you decide to stay. It’s worth remembering that the southern coast is in season between November and March, when the ocean is calmer, and suited to swimming and surfing. The west coast isn’t well-suited to surfing, but you can expect the best weather at a similar time. If you’re travelling between May and September, consider heading east to little-visited Kalkudah Bay instead, for plenty of sunshine and superb strolls along golden sands.

For Boutique Bliss

• The Villa Bentota, famously Sri Lanka’s first boutique hotel, is set just across the railway tracks from the golden sands of Bentota Beach. Originally a private residence and later restored by acclaimed architect Geoffrey Bawa, this chic spot has 14 guest rooms with block printed textiles and an airy feel. Two swimming pools, a laid-back bar, fantastic fare  and exemplary service add to the romantic appeal. 
• Taru Villas, a grown-up little hotel on Mawella Beach, has spacious suites with a monochrome colour palette enhanced by a curated collection of antiques and artwork. The Tangalle Social is a top spot for some superb seafood, and the Taru group has a reputation for exquisite attention to detail. A restful honeymoon favourite. 
• Halcyon Mawella, just next door, is more informal, with ten pretty guest rooms decorated by Sri Lanka-based British designer Lindsay Taylor. Think fired earth tiles, repurposed wooden antiques, and cosy four-posters topped with handwoven bedspreads in warm tones. The pan-Asian eatery also prides itself on its cocktails, and the pool is ideal for refreshing dips. 
• Eraeliya Villas & Gardens, on the coast in Weligama, has generous suites tucked within recently built villas and a century-old house. Beautifully appointed interiors reflect owner Nyuri’s impeccable taste, and romantics will find plenty of space to kick back in blissful tranquility.

For an Intimate Bolthole

• Abode by the Beach, an offshoot of much-loved Abode Bombay, faces the sea on a little point at the edge of Ahangama. Offering just two contemporary suites with floor-to-ceiling windows framing ocean views, plus big sink-into bathtubs, this is a top spot for those seeking a private getaway — set above a lively resto-bar. Sunsets are spectacular and buzzy Ahangama’s bars and eateries are just moments away.

For a Tented Escape

• Karpaha Sands, on the island’s less-visited east coast, is well off the beaten track. The collection of 17 luxurious tented suites, however, are well worth the journey to Kalkudah Bay. Honeymoon heaven, with a huge sandy beach, great cocktails served under swaying palm trees, and stylish suites with big tubs, outdoor rain showers, portable speakers and dazzling views. One for stargazers. 
• Uga Chena Huts, perched between the Indian Ocean and Yala National Park, will delight honeymooning wildlife enthusiasts. Spot elephants and leopards on private safaris with expert guides, before unwinding at the spa, or soaking up the sunshine and sea views from your private plunge pool. The food is fantastic, too.
