Overlooking the Swedish Royal Palace, no other hotel has this stunning view of the city of Stockholm. Wake up to seagulls singing in the morning and the toots of ferries coming into the Blasieholmen peninsula. With the property still privately owned, there is a boutique-like feel with friendly and personalized service despite the property boasting more than 270 rooms. Some may say the hallways are a little dated, but public areas and rooms have been newly renovated and full of character. The suites are impeccable and a highlight. There are 70 to choose from with all of them designed by local designers and furnished in true Scandinavian style — bright, colourful and even tech-enabled.
Founded in the late 1800s by a French chef, Régis Cadier, the 5-star property is still a place for gastronomes. There are multiple dining options including a cool cocktail and champagne bar, Cadier, two al fresco restaurants overlooking the water, as well as local celebrity chef Mathias Dahlgren’s restaurants: a bistro-style eatery, Matbaren and his 1-Michelin starred restaurant, Seafood Gastro. You may actually run into the “Godfather of Swedish cuisine” in the hallways among other celebrities. The Nordic spa is as expected – a sanctuary in an urban city with indoor pool, steamrooms, sauna and the place to get a top-notch Swedish massage in Stockholm.

Why do people love staying in your hotel? Staying at Grand Hôtel is about more than just a hotel experience. For over 150 years, the hotel has been part of Stockholm’s cultural and social life, and that sense of history remains very much alive today.
Combined with a warm and personal level of service, it creates a feeling of being part of something that goes beyond the stay itself – and that is what resonates with guests.
What is there to do in the area? The hotel is ideally located in the very heart of Stockholm, with many of the city’s most iconic experiences just steps away. Guests can explore the historic Old Town, enjoy world-class shopping and dining, or visit nearby museums and cultural landmarks such as the Royal Palace and Djurgården. Whether it’s a walk along the waterfront, a visit to a gallery, or simply taking in the atmosphere of the city, everything is within easy reach.
What kind of breakfast do you offer? We offer several breakfast options across the hotel. Verandan serves a generous breakfast buffet with both international favourites and Swedish specialties, while Cadierbaren offers a more intimate à la carte breakfast. Breakfast can also be enjoyed in the comfort of your room through our room service.
Do you offer other meals? And can you recommend good places to eat out locally? The hotel offers a range of dining experiences across its five restaurants, from refined fine dining to more relaxed settings, as well as bars and in-room dining throughout the day. From craft cocktails in Cadierbaren and gastronomy by Mathias Dahlgren at Matbaren and Seafood Gastro, to sunlit lunches at Grand Soleil and classic dining at Verandan, guests can experience some of the very best of Swedish cuisine without leaving the hotel.
For those wishing to explore further, the surrounding area offers a wide selection of excellent restaurants – from classic Swedish cuisine to contemporary Nordic and international dining, all within walking distance.
Which are your most popular room types, and why? Our suites are among the most sought-after room categories. Of our 279 rooms, 70 are suites, offering generous space, beautiful views and a distinct sense of character. Many of our guests choose to invest in that extra level of comfort – more space, unique design and a more residential feel during their stay.
What facilities do you have for children and can you fit extra beds in your rooms ? While the hotel does not have dedicated facilities specifically for children, families are very welcome. Extra beds can be arranged in many of our rooms and suites, allowing for a comfortable stay for guests travelling with children.
What message would you like to give The Hotel Guru readers? Grand Hôtel offers a stay that brings together the very best of Stockholm – its history, its culture and its contemporary energy – all in one place. Whether through its location, its restaurants or the atmosphere of the house itself, it is a destination in its own right, shaped by over 150 years of tradition and a continued focus on quality and character.
"Set on Strömkajen, the Grand Hôtel opened in 1874 and has winning views across the harbour to the Royal Palace and many other Stockholm landmarks – some suites come with binoculars and a handy guide to this engrossing panorama."
